On October 4, 2019, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden visited Bend to discuss the trend of youth vaping. Members of the Shared Future Coalition as well as other local youth took time out of their day to share local insight on the issue. State Representative Cheri Helt was also in attendance and particularly interested in local and regional initiatives around preventing tobacco use. Following the round-table discussion, youth were interviewed by local news outlets and took pictures with the Senator and Representative, including Gabriella Shirtcliff, currently interning with the Deschutes County Prevention Team as a Teen Community Health Advocate. Dave Huntley, a volunteer with the Shared Future Coalition, provided information about local strategies for reducing teen access to tobacco products.
The media attention provided a larger platform for local youth and community members to share their perspective. Click here to read The Bulletin article: Sen. Wyden Chats with Local Students About Fighting Teen Vaping
This event was a great chance for local youth to practice public speaking and interaction with legislative decision-makers, an area of focus this past year for the Teen Community Health Advocates (a sub-committee of the Shared Future Coalition). TCHA is currently recruiting for more youth membership from high schools in Bend.
